Can dogs eat cinnamon? The short answer is yes. Cinnamon is a relatively safe condiment for dogs. As we’ll mention later, the benefits touted elsewhere are not really fully understood in the context of dogs, and feeding your dog cinnamon requires a certain level of care and discretion. Dogs can eat small amounts of cinnamon. But; cinnamon rolls, cinnamon toast crunch, or cinnamon bread bad for dogs. Because they have sugar, raisins, nutmeg, cocoa powder etc .. and all of them toxic for dogs.

The health benefits of a diet containing cinnamon are featured. Cinnamon is such a concentrated source of antioxidants that it beats 26 different spices, including “superfoods” garlic and oregano! It has been shown to lower total cholesterol, “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while keeping “good” HDL cholesterol levels stable.

It has been shown to inhibit protein build-up typical of Alzheimer’s disease, protect neurons, normalize neurotransmitter function, and improve motor function in mice with Parkinson’s disease. Cinnamon can also lower blood sugar levels and increase a person’s sensitivity to insulin. Both can be therapeutic for diabetics. There’s even some research going into the antibacterial and antifungal properties of cinnamon!

With all of these exciting human medicine breakthroughs, it stands to reason that well-meaning dog owners might want to give their dog cinnamon in hopes of getting the same results. However, our understanding of the uses of cinnamon in integrative human medicine is still relatively new and there is not so much research into whether these human medicine uses also apply to our canine companions.

Can my dog be allergic to cinnamon?


It is quite possible. The first reactions of a cinnamon allergy often appear as itching or blisters in the mouth. Not every dog owner will notice this immediately. But at the latest when skin reactions occur, an allergic reaction can no longer be overlooked

It should be noted that coumarin, a compound naturally occurring in plants, can be isolated in both cassia cinnamon and Ceylon cinnamon. It has a fragrant, sweet odor and is widely used in fragrances and cosmetics. But it is also used as a precursor for such anticoagulant drugs as warfarin and coumadin.

Ingestion of excessive amounts of coumarin can be toxic to both the liver and kidneys in humans. There is research to show the upper limits of a daily requirement in a person’s diet. Unfortunately, there is no information on how much coumarin can cause liver or kidney toxicity in dogs every day. Cassia cinnamon is a more concentrated source of coumarin than Ceylon cinnamon with ~ 1 percent coumarin, while Ceylon cinnamon only contains ~ 0.004 percent. While both varieties have relatively low levels of coumarin, Ceylon cinnamon is much safer in terms of the potential for coumarin toxicity.

While cinnamon is a technically safe food that dogs can ingest. It is not safe and the uses and benefits of adding cinnamon to your dog’s daily diet are not yet fully understood. If you want to include cinnamon in your dog’s diet, ask your veterinarian before adding it to your dog’s food and before filling your diffuser with essential oil with cinnamon oil.
